There is at least
one person very close to you who has been sexually assaulted.
This person agonized
over the decision to report the assailant knowing that if they do, they will be
disbelieved and possibly ridiculed. They know that even if they endure all of that, they will
probably watch their assailant go free or get little more than a slap on the
wrist.
This person saw your
posts disparaging the #MeToo movement as a “progressive smear campaign
orchestrated by losers on the left who are frustrated over the results of the
last election” or something to that effect.
They may agree with
you on more things than they disagree, however; now……This person knows that you, as
their family member or close friend, or loved one; are one of the people who
will disbelieve and ridicule them. He or
she now knows that you value political wins for your team of strangers (tens/hundreds/thousands
of miles away) in Washington more than you value your relationship with him or
her.
You know this person
very well. You have no idea who they
might be, but they know who you are.
